James talked to Committee members Rashmi Chopra and Myrto Rochat of his non-linear career journey from photography to theatre production, cutting his teeth on fringe and small shows, through to producing West End theatre before almost accidentally coming to run what was 20 years ago a modest neighbourhood outfit and turning it into the current world class, independent opera company it is now.  He was not shy to say he started at OHP knowing little about opera and was happy to discuss the challenges of wearing two hats as CEO and Director of Opera.  He discussed the challenge of striking a balance in choosing productions and repertoire which continue to appeal widely whilst also not being afraid to experiment and promote more contemporary pieces. James also spoke passionately about his deep commitment to nurturing young singers through the Young Artists Scheme, and the importance of community engagement, recalling how company singers sang over the phone to community members isolated in their homes during Covid.
